Perfect: 5 Myth-Busting Things About Books That Change Lives and Careers (Part 5 of 6)

(A Notes to Self Series)

“A great read is the perfect gift: thoughtful and easy to wrap (with no batteries or assembly required). Plus, I think everyone could use a few more books in their lives.”

– Bill Gates

Last Tuesday, I posted the first instalment of this six-part quote series about books. I talked about J.K. Rowling’s words and how she may not be too keen about her book’s magic to be really happening in reality but she believes that good books could pave the way for magical results.

On Wednesday, Elon Musk’s three-word statement should have struck our chord.

We got another glimpse of Oprah Winfrey’s thoughts on Thursday.

Mark Zuckerberg had something to say yesterday, too.

Now, even as Rowling, Musk, Winfrey, and Zuckerberg may have more than a billion dollars worth of reasons to state their words, some may still be inclined to say otherwise.

Books are a waste of time. There are more important things we have to do.  Right?

No.

This very popular person has at least one important reason plus heaps more for that.

Myth # 4: Books are a waste of time.

The truth: Books are worth one’s while.

“A great read is the perfect gift: thoughtful and easy to wrap (with no batteries or assembly required). Plus, I think everyone could use a few more books in their lives.”

Those were the words of Bill Gates, a consistent chart-topper in the richest people on earth list for three decades from 1987 to 2017. Known for his world-changing Microsoft, Bill is also a self-proclaimed bibliophile. In an article, he talks about how reading made a difference in his life. It’s not so uncommon nowadays to find articles about the books he found interesting, useful, beneficial or life-changing.

Want to know which pieces made it to Bill’s 2018 list? Check them out in his site, Gatesnotes.

Now, if you think this article focuses more on the money, think again. Bill is not just the second richest man in the world, he is the world’s most generous giver, too. Here’s what he says about philanthropy:

“Is the rich world aware of how four billion of the six billion live? If we were aware, we would want to help out, we’d want to get involved.”

Take that from a man who loves books.
