Book Review: Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon

What would a grandfather feel when he lays eyes on a granddaughter he never knew existed? Would a headstrong teenage girl finally get her chance at life? What unfolds when credible lore collides with questionable progress? Which path would you choose in the face of such revelations?

Charlie Sheldon takes us on an engrossing journey with surprising turns and profound emotional depth in Strong Heart. The narrative starts with Tom Olsen, whose life is completely flipped upside down when thirteen-year-old Sarah Cooley shows up at his home and introduces herself as his granddaughter. He is shocked and alarmed by her statement, which she describes as a planet covered in tall trees and drenched in rain, reflecting both her chaotic existence and her surroundings.

Tom must decide whether to include Sarah on the planned trip to his grandfather’s grave or to scrap the plan as he struggles to accept Sarah’s arrival. Even though he is reluctant at first, he chooses to take Sarah on the backpacking trip in the hopes that it may impart to her important values such as resilience, responsibility, and character on the stunning Olympic Peninsula of Washington State.

But as the journey goes on, the relationships change, and Tom starts to question if Sarah is directing him toward self-discovery or if he is leading her. Sheldon skillfully blends themes of mystery, adventure, and the inexplicable to produce a gripping and provocative story. The characters’ psychological travels as they negotiate their changing relationships are reflected in the rich descriptions of the Pacific Northwest, which also play as a vivid backdrop.

As Tom and Sarah go on this journey together, the reader is invited to explore the complexities of family, identity, and the connection between past and present. Through their shared experiences, Sheldon emphasises the importance of understanding one’s roots and the transformative power of love and acceptance.

In Strong Heart, the collision of lore and reality offers a fascinating exploration of what it means to confront one’s history while forging a new path forward. This beautifully crafted adventure tale is a poignant reminder of the bonds that tie us together and the strength found in overcoming obstacles. Charlie Sheldon’s ability to blend rich storytelling with relatable themes makes this a compelling read.
